Windows are an important part of your home. Not only do they serve in an aesthetic capacity, but they also have a functional use, too. Windows allow us fresh air inside our homes when we want it, but also help to keep the weather out of our interiors. Since windows are so critical to your Plano home, it is essential that you take the time to inspect our windows regularly to prevent them from falling into disrepair.
The brick molding around your window can also rot - which means water can leak into your home. Leaking water into your walls can cause structural damage, mildew, and mold over time if left untreated. These situations can be both costly to repair and dangerous to your health.
To check the health of your window sill, push down (gently!) and feel if it moves or is soft or cracks. If it does, you need to have your window checked for damage and rot.
Also, while you are at it, take a look at the window sash. The window sash is the part of the window that you open. If you see damage or rotting materials, it is time to replace your windows.
Make checking your windows a once-a-year part of your home's maintenance to avoid any costly surprises and repair bills.

Check for Rot
One of the most important things you can do to keep your windows in good shape is to maintain them. The best way to do that is to check for rot. When checking your windows, touch the wooden parts of your frame. Does it feel soft? Is it spongy? If so, you have wood rot. Wood that is in good repair will feel hard, dense and solid.Check the Trim
While you're checking for wood rot, check to make sure your outside trim is intact. The trim serves to protect the external layers of your window and seal the window into your home. If your trim is damaged or rotting, your windowsill and window frame may be at risk of damage, too.Don't Forget the Brick Molding
Brick molding helps to frame your windows and give them a finishing touch. Brick molding also makes it easier to install replacement windows when making updates and allow the replacements to be made without causing damage to your masonry or siding. The brick molding around your window can also rot - which means water can leak into your home. Leaking water into your walls can cause structural damage, mildew, and mold over time if left untreated. These situations can be both costly to repair and dangerous to your health.
Look Inside, Too
While you're checking out the windows on the exterior of your home, you should also take a look at your window on the inside, too. The window sill is made of wood and runs across the bottom of your window. If you have trim or brick molding that is rotting or damaged, you could have damage to your window sill. Damage happens because when water seeps into your wall, it ruins everything in its path - including your inside trim work and even electrical outlets. To check the health of your window sill, push down (gently!) and feel if it moves or is soft or cracks. If it does, you need to have your window checked for damage and rot.
The Window Itself
We've talked about checking around your window, but what about the window itself? Take care to check the window frame out for good repair. It is hard to replace sections of a window frame, so if your damage is significant, it is time to call Scott Exteriors for a replacement or upgrade. Also, while you are at it, take a look at the window sash. The window sash is the part of the window that you open. If you see damage or rotting materials, it is time to replace your windows.
